Amir's change

Throughout the story, Baba worries because Amir never stands up for himself. When does this change?

Truly, I think that Amir started to gradually change when Baba passed away. This was the moment in life that Amir realized that he was all alone and Baba was not there anymore to help him get out of sticky situations. This was Amir's true moment that he started to change. His change starts to unfold quickly as Rahim Khan calls him back to Afghanistan. I noticed this change because if he was the same old Amir, scared and helpless, he would never have taken that trip to Afghanistan. Amir needed his father the most and Baba was always available to him. This was the true moment where Baba was no longer at arms reach but only a faint memory.

My whole life, I had been "Baba's son." Now he was gone. Baba couldn't show me the way anymore; I'd have to find it on my own" (pg 174).

After reading the question I had to really think about it...at first I thought it was when he married Soraya but then I thought that Amir started to change after Baba died.
"My whole life I had been Baba's son. Now he was gone. Baba couldn't show me the way anymore; I'd have to find it on my own. The thought of it terrified me" (p.174)
That quote reminds me that Amir only had Baba, especially in America. He completly changed when he went to Afghanistan he finally stood up for himself and Hassan...after writting this I guess I could have just said dido to Alisa....

Amir throughout the story was a pushover. He was always standing on the sidelines never standing up for himself or anyone else for that matter. This all Changed when Amir was back in Afganistan trying to clain Hassan's son back from Assef, this is the most physical stnading up that he does. (did that come out right?) He really showed change from the little boy in Kabal who was scared of everything to a man who is willing to risk his life for a child that he doesn't even know.

Amir’s change occurs when he and Baba move to America. There is a part in the story when Baba is at the supermarket and finally looses it and realizes that they are not in Afghanistan anymore. When Amir shows up and holds Baba back from doing anymore harm to the store, this was the point that I think he changed without him realizing it. America made him a man. Baba could buy him everything anymore or battle the problems that he had to face in this country. Amir was on his own and when he stood up and stopped Baba at the shop, it was the silent turnaround.

Sadly, I think that Baba never gets to see Amir become a man. Baba's funeral is when Amir realized that he didn't have his father to tell him what to do anymore and that he was now in charge of his own life and decissions.
Then, when Amir goes back to the old country and he is talking to Rahim Khan he finally decides what he needs to do so he can forgive himself forgive.
After wallowing in selfpity for all those years Amir finally does the right think and risks his life for Hassan's son. Baba would have been proud:)

Like many of the other students said I believe Amir began to slowly change after Baba's death. The moment I really recall as Amir beginning to stand up for himself was when he was in Rahim Khan's apartment and he decided that he would go out and look for Sohrab. He saw a way to redem not only himself but his father for their betrayel to thier servents. So Amir jumped at the chance and throughout his whole journey to find Sohrab he encounters a few situations in where he must defend himself. For example when he doesnt take no for an answer from the man at the orphanage and demands to find Sohrab's whereabouts, or when he stand up to Assef finally and takes the beating he deserves in order to save the life of Sohrab. Another form of Amir being a man and standing up for not only himself but Sohrab too is when he is in the hospital in Afghanistan and is not even close to his normal health and still has trouble walking. Amir sucks it up and leaves the hospital in order to protect Sohrab and himself. In my mind that takes alot of strength after getting beaten that bad to not get down and to stay up and continue on your journey and mission to save a boy's life who you hardley know.

Well i think the change begins to occur when Baba dies and it takes full effect when he agrees to go to Afghnistan and find Sohrab. He takes responsibility and trys to find his half nephew. He knows how dangerous his journey will be and he accepts it. I think that Amir owes it to Hassan to stick up for Sohrab and that is why he does it.
